Mark Rosenberg is Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of Renal Diseases and Hypertension at the University of Minnesota.

His research is focused on the role of kidney stem cells in kidney regeneration following acute and chronic renal injury. Working with Dr. Sandeep Gupta, their lab has isolated and characterized a multipotent renal progenitor cell (MRPC) from adult kidneys that has self-renewal and broad differentiation properties. Studies are being performed in the following areas:

  • Determining the differentiation potential of renal stem cells
  • Defining the pathways of renal cell lineage progression
  • Defining the renal stem cell niche
  • The therapeutic use of renal and other stem cells in the therapy of acute renal failure
  • Determining the role of renal stem cells in the pathophysiology of chronic renal diseases
